What is Taxpayer University?

Taxpayer University is a financial education and foreclosure prevention initiative designed to help property owners understand, manage, and protect their homes.
We provide clear, practical education on how property taxes work, how to avoid delinquency, and how to access available exemptions and payment programs before a crisis occurs.
Through structured courses and certification-based learning, participants gain the knowledge and tools to:
-
Understand property tax assessments and billing cycles•
-
Learn the difference between current and delinquent taxes
-
Identify eligibility for exemptions and relief programs
-
Create a realistic plan to budget for annual tax payments
-
Avoid penalties, interest, and foreclosure proceedings
Taxpayer University is built on one simple principle: education changes outcomes.
Instead of waiting until foreclosure notices are issued, we focus on prevention. By equipping homeowners with financial literacy, accountability, and actionable strategies, we help families stay informed, stay prepared, and stay in their homes.
Participants who complete the program receive a Taxpayer University Certification — a recognition that they understand their responsibilities as property owners and are committed to long-term homeownership stability.
Taxpayer University is more than a course.
It is a pathway to preservation, protection,
and generational wealth.

Why This Matters
Foreclosure doesn’t just impact one home. It impacts entire neighborhoods.
When a property is lost to tax foreclosure, families lose stability, communities lose generational wealth, and neighborhoods face increased vacancy, blight, and declining property values. One foreclosure can trigger a ripple effect across an entire block.
In Wayne County alone, property tax foreclosures once reached over 26,000 in a single year. Through intentional intervention and prevention strategies, that number has been reduced by nearly 90%. But even with this progress, thousands of households remain at risk every year.
Many homeowners qualify for exemptions, payment plans, or assistance programs — yet they don’t apply. Some don’t understand how property taxes work. Others wait too long. In today’s economy — with rising utility costs, inflation, medical expenses, and job instability — even one unexpected hardship can push a family into delinquency.
The reality is this:
• Job loss or reduced hours
• Medical emergencies
• Death of a primary income earner
• Unexpected housing repairs
These are some of the leading causes behind tax delinquency
But foreclosure is often preventable.
Education, early intervention, and financial planning can change the outcome. When homeowners understand how to budget for taxes, apply for exemptions, and act before deadlines pass, they protect not just their homes — but their family’s future.
Taxpayer University exists because prevention is more powerful than recovery.
Homeownership is one of the most important tools for building generational wealth. Losing it over property taxes — especially when solutions exist — should never be the final chapter.
We believe informed homeowners make empowered decisions. And empowered decisions keep families in their homes.
